Capsule Endoscopy
in Denver

What is a Capsule Endoscopy?

Capsule endoscopy is a procedure that uses a small wireless camera to take pictures of your digestive tract. The capsule endoscopy camera sits inside a vitamin-size capsule that you swallow. As the capsule travels through your digestive tract, it takes thousands of photos for subsequent physician review. It will help visualize areas of the intestine that are not easily reached with more-traditional endoscopy procedures.

Your provider may recommend this procedure for many different reasons, including:

  • Examination of the esophagus, stomach and small intestine.
  • Diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
  • To pinpoint the cause of gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • Diagnosis of celiac disease.
  • Diagnosis of cancer.
  • Screening for polyps.
  • And more.

How is a Capsule Endoscopy Performed?

On the day of your procedure, you will swallow the video capsule, which contains a small wireless camera. You will be free to go about your normal activities after that. Your provider will determine which type of capsule endoscopy will be performed. If the Capsocam device is being used, you will simply swallow the capsule that you will later retrieve and send in for analysis. If the PillCam device is being used, our staff will place an arrangement of electrodes on your abdomen. These electrodes will then be attached to a data recorder that you will be asked to wear around your waist with a special belt. The data recorder and belt will need to be returned later that day.

How Can I Prepare for My Procedure?

Before the procedure, and after the procedure when you return to your daily activities, it is important that you follow certain steps directed by your provider. The instructions vary some depending on if you have the Capsocam or PillCam. For example, you will need to retrieve and send in the Capsocam as opposed to returning the Pillcam recorder equipment to the clinic. Certain medications may need to be stopped for capsule endoscopy. Remember to always consult with your prescribing doctor before stopping medications, especially blood-thinning or diabetic medications.

It is never pleasant to have gastro problems, however, the staff at your office from top to bottom have been very accommodating. They take a personal interest in your condition and imagine this; THEY RETURN PHONE MESSAGES PROMPTLY. I'm not completely better yet but have total confidence they will get me there. I highly recommend this practice.

The front staff was immediately attentive as soon as I walked in. The nurses and PAs were professional and very nice, and the doctors were even better. The procedure went smoothly and could not have gone better. Of course, having positive lab results makes it easier to post a glowing report but I got the impression that if I had been diagnosed differently, they would have taken care of me with the same kindness and dedication.

I was very nervous about my first colonoscopy. Dr. Fairbanks put me at ease immediately and did an excellent job. I was able to watch the last few minutes of the procedure and it was awesome! She explained everything clearly. I had my procedure done at Parker Adventist and they were wonderful as well! Job well done, Dr. Fairbanks! Thanks, Robin
