Liver Disease 101

Symptoms of liver disease include fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, fever, itching skin, abdominal pain, yellowing of the eyes and skin, dark urine and/or pale stools.
Liver disease is on the rise worldwide. Common medications and lifestyle habits that cause liver disease include medications (Acetaminophen overdose), Hepatitis A, B & C, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, alcohol abuse and some herbal and alternative remedies.

FibroScan - A New Diagnostic Tool to Measure Liver Stiffness

SDG is the first gastroenterology practice in Denver to offer FibroScan examinations. We have performed more than 1,000 FibroScan examinations since 2018.
An FDA cleared technology, FibroScan non-invasively measures liver stiffness by capturing and calculating the speed of a shear wave as it travels through the liver. If stiffness is detected, it can be used to assist in the clinical management of liver disease and potentially replace an invasive liver biopsy. Fibroscan is covered by many insurance plans, including Medicare.

How does FibroScan Work?

Patients will be asked to lie on their back, with their right arm raised above their head as the FibroScan operator applies a water-based gel to the skin and positions the probe adjacent to the liver. The liver is then scanned to capture 10 meaningful measurements at the same location.
The entire examination is painless and non-invasive, lasting five to 10 minutes.

To schedule the FibroScan procedure, a referral must be obtained from your primary care physician prior to scheduling. An SDG provider can also order FibroScan. Once we have received the referral from your physician our office will contact you to schedule the test.
The prep for FibroScan: Nothing to eat or drink three hours prior, including water. No gum chewing or smoking. Wear comfortable clothes that will allow access to the right side of your rib cage.
