As a gastroenterologist who specializes in treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), pregnancy and IBD (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) is something that I get asked about a lot.
Women with IBD can have healthy pregnancies. However, experiencing an IBD flare while you’re pregnant can lead to bad outcomes. The most important thing for you to do is to get as healthy as possible going into any pregnancy. That will give you the best chance of not having a flare. It will also ensure the best outcomes for both you and your baby.
Most IBD medications are safe to use during pregnancy. For more detailed data on IBD drugs and pregnancy, I recommend patients look at the PIANO study. This is a national research study on the safety of IBD medications in pregnancy and the short- and long-term outcomes of the children involved. The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation website also contains a wealth of resources and information on family planning with IBD, IBD surgery and pregnancy and diet during pregnancy.
If you’re planning to get pregnant, or even if it’s just a possibility, please speak with your gastroenterologist. They can help develop a treatment plan to ensure your health and well-being throughout your journey toward becoming a new mom.
