Taking care of your overall health through nutrition and weight management is very important for living a long and healthy life. Being overweight or obese affects many people in the United States alone and can put you at risk for many conditions such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea and even certain cancers. Obesity is also connected to a number of gastrointestinal diseases including Barrett’s esophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gallstones, fatty liver disease and more.
What is Obesity?
Obesity is a term used to describe a weight that is higher than what is considered healthy for a given height. The main screening tool used today for obesity is the Body Mass Index (BMI). In order to calculate your BMI, use the Adult BMI Calculator from the CDC. Adults with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight while those with a BMI of 30 or more are considered obese. Obesity can be further classified as Class I, II or III depending upon the degree of increase in BMI over 30.
Most people become overweight when they eat more calories than they are burning. Your body will store the difference. However, other factors such as medical conditions, emotional factors, pregnancy and more can also contribute to weight gain.
Tips for Treating Obesity
Weight loss is the main treatment for obesity, which can reduce blood pressure, blood sugar levels, cholesterol and more to help you achieve an overall healthier you! Generally, in order to lose weight, you should use more energy than you take in. This involves consuming lower calorie and lower fat meals, increasing physical activity and also incorporating stress management and social support. Weight loss surgery is also an effective treatment for those who are morbidly obese (BMI of ≥ 40).
