What is TissueCypher?
Approximately 5-15% of GERD patients will develop Barrett’s esophagus, a condition in which the esophagus becomes damaged and inflamed by acid reflux. A diagnosis of Barrett’s esophagus is a risk factor for esophageal cancer. Esophageal cancer is one of the fastest-growing cancers in the U.S., with men over the age of 50, people who smoke, people who are overweight, people with chronic acid reflux and people with a family history of Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal cancer at greatest risk.
Progression to esophageal cancer is preventable if high-risk Barrett’s esophagus patients are identified and treated at early stages. The key is identifying low-risk patients to extend their surveillance treatment and reduce unnecessary medical procedures, and identifying high-risk test patients to increase their surveillance or intervene with treatment to prevent esophageal cancer.
TissueCypher is the first AI-driven precision medicine test developed to determine a patient’s individual risk of progressing from Barrett’s esophagus to esophageal cancer. This test is designed for patients who have recently been diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus or those who are participating in a surveillance program.
How is TissueCypher performed?
TissueCypher analyzes tissue that has been biopsied from the esophageal lining during an endoscopy to confirm a diagnosis of Barrett’s esophagus. The test further characterizes molecular changes in Barrett’s esophagus tissue that precede abnormal, and sometimes cancerous, cell growth. Through biomarkers, spatial biology (cell behavior) and artificial intelligence, TissueCypher can determine a patient’s five-year risk of progressing from Barrett’s esophagus to esophageal cancer.
