SOUTH DENVER GASTROENTEROLOGY, P.C.

Let’s talk about the uncomfortable – Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
in Denver

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) isn’t talked about often, but it is incredibly common. In fact, it’s one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders. The condition impacts more than 200,000 Americans each year. About 2 in 3 people who suffer from IBS are female. IBS also occurs more frequently in people younger than 50 and in those who have a family history of the condition.

IBS symptoms can be uncomfortable. The most common IBS symptoms to be aware of are:

  • Recurring or chronic episodes of abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort along with a change in bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation
  • Bloating, gas or urgency

The exact cause of IBS is unknown, which can make the condition more difficult to diagnose. According to a survey conducted by the International Foundation for Gastrointestinal Disorders, nearly 2,000 IBS patients reported that they suffered from symptoms associated with the condition for 6.6 years before being diagnosed. IBS symptom flares may happen unexpectedly and can change over time or even daily. They can last a few days, weeks or even months at a time. Flares can be triggered by different types of food and periods of stress.

Treatment options for IBS depend on the symptoms experienced. If you notice a change in your bowel movements or recurrent abdominal pain, be sure to schedule an appointment with one of South Denver GI’s expert providers right away. For some patients, symptoms can be managed through diet and lifestyle changes. South Denver GI’s registered dietitian, Angela Waliszewski, works closely with IBS patients to develop individualized diet plans to help lessen or relieve IBS symptoms.

Because of how often IBS symptoms impact quality of life and their uncertainty, it’s important to raise awareness of the condition. April is IBS Awareness Month. Join the conversation and share your story with the hashtags #IBSAwarenessMonth and #Youand IBS
