What is Proctitis?
Proctitis is inflammation of the lining of the rectum, or the lower end of the large intestine which leads to the anus. This condition is most common in individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), though it can also be caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or radiation therapy for cancer.
Symptoms of proctitis may include:
- A continuous feeling of needing to have a bowel movement.
- Rectal pain.
- Rectal bleeding.
- Pain on the left side of the abdomen.
- Diarrhea.
- Painful bowel movements.
- Passing mucus through the rectum.
How is Proctitis Diagnosed?
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of proctitis or your provider suspects that you may have this condition, he or she will have you undergo some testing for diagnosis. This testing may include blood tests, stools tests, a flexible sigmoidoscopy, a colonoscopy or testing for STIs.
Proctitis Treatment Options
The treatment that is right for treating proctitis will depend on the underlying cause of inflammation.
Proctitis from Infection
In cases where proctitis is caused by an infection, treatment options may include antibiotics or antivirals.
Proctitis from IBD
The main goal of treatment for proctitis caused by IBD is to reduce the inflammation in the rectum. This can be achieved through anti-inflammatory medication or surgery to remove the damaged part of the digestive tract.
Proctitis from Radiation Therapy
If you are experiencing proctitis due to radiation therapy, your provider may recommend medications to help control inflammation and reduce bleeding, stool softeners or ablation treatment to destroy abnormal, bleeding tissue.
Overall Diet and Nutrition
Patients with proctitis should avoid caffeine and greasy foods to lessen diarrhea symptoms. Eating soft, bland foods such as plain rice, boiled potatoes, baked chicken and bananas can also help to control loose stool.
